King Khat

Interview with Uri Marantz, director and screenwriter of the movie King Khat, interviewer Javier Garcia Puerto
"Marantz is a filmmaker from Israel. He is a screenwriter and creator of well-known TV series in his country, such as the hit series Daddy. King Khat is the director's first feature film. The name of the film comes from cathinone, which is a psychoactive substance found in the shrub Catha edulis, or Khat plant.

An Israeli chemist becomes the most notorious drug lord of the 21st century when he invents a legal psychoactive drug derived from cathinone. As his empire grows, he must constantly navigate legal and ethical challenges while maintaining his power and influence.

The film uses state-of-the-art animation techniques. The story is dark, funny and as if a real-life fairy tale. It grabs you from the first frame, takes you on a crazy journey and does not let go of you long after you leave the cinema.

“Sometimes even I say it’s a film about drugs, but it’s basically a broken love story.” - Uri Marantz
