Interview with Batbayar Chogsom, director and screenwriter of the movie "White Flag", interviewer Massimo Iannetti.
"Director Chogsom wanted the movie to tell a contemporary story in a traditional context.
A naked woman gallops through a dusty prairie on a shaggy horse. We are introduced to two young women, starting a new life together on the steppes and fighting ghosts from the past. Detective Zoring comes to question them from the city about a murder and soon begins to doubt between what is right and what is wrong.
Although “White Flag” is only his second feature, Chogsom’s signature is clear in his films. The director likes to use landscape as an additional character, observing the suffering of people in the film. In “White Flag” the landscape is extending deserts and steppes, the tough majesty a counterpoint to the limits of the cityscape. In addition to the beautiful Mongolian landscape, silence and excellently composed music play an important role in the film.
Chogsom grew up in Mongolia and went to study ethnology, political science and cultural studies in Switzerland. Six years after graduating, his debut feature „Out of Paradise“ won the best feature film prize in the Shanghai International Film Festival. In 2015 he had made a short film of the same name.
