Interview with Karl R. Hearne, director and screenwriter of the movie G, interviewer Andrei Liimets
"Visiting the Black Nights Festival is a special moment for the half-Estonian, half-Irish filmmaker Karl Raudsepp-Hearne, who has never given up his Estonian roots, as it is also his first time setting foot in Estonia. His clerical grandfather Karl fled Estonia in 1944 to Canada, where he became the North American bishop of the Estonian Lutheran Church.
Hearne studied at Nanjing University in China, as well as at McGill University and for a year at Concordia University in Canada. After his 2007 short film Stuff, he took a short break from filmmaking to help a friend start a business, only to find himself in that business for much longer than he had planned. He returned to filmmaking in the mid-2010s and quickly secured funding from Telefilm Canada to make ""Touched"", his first feature film.
In Hearne's second feature film, ""The G"", an elderly woman, played by one of the most talented and treasured independent actors Dale Dickey, embarks on a path of bloody revenge when corrupt officials take away her home and forcefully move her and her husband into a prison-like retirement home. The film is inspired by the director's grandmother, who he felt could be described as a true badass, who was incredibly complex in character. The style of the film can be classified as a winter noir, where the snowy and bleak atmosphere supports the gloomy action.
