An interview with Eeva Mägi, the director of "Who am I Smiling for?", interviewer Andrei Liimets
Eeva Mägi's documentary film ""Who am I smiling for?"" tells the story of the strength of a mother's love and her fight for her children until the last breath. It is a film about a young boy growing up in the midst of profound and irreversible changes, searching for his way to grieve and understand the world.
""The story is very harsh, but I didn’t want to make it in a way that feels depressing,"" said Eeva Mägi in an interview with Andrei Liimets.
In addition to being a filmmaker, the director is also a lawyer. During her school days, she dreamed of becoming a psychologist, but after a short internship in a hospital, she realized that surviving in that field was a challenge. From a young age, she escaped from school to go to the cinema to watch films because they gave her the feeling of butterflies in her stomach, the feeling of falling in love.
Mägi has acknowledged that making a documentary is a personal process for both the filmmaker and the source - often, they grow so close that the film crew becomes a part of the family.
