An interview with Szabolcs Hajdu, the director of "Kalman's Day", interviewer Nikolaj Nikitin.
"Hungarian screenwriter, director and actor Szabolcs Hajdu belongs to the new generation of Hungarian filmmakers.
Hajdu has directed 10 feature films since 2001, received many awards and even had his 2006 film “White Palms” nominated for the Oscars. He also stars in many of his films along with his wife, actress Orsolya Török-Illyés. Such is the case in Kalman's Day. Hajdu explains the choice: “It was easy. When I’m between the actors, I can direct the rhythm and dynamic of the scene.“
At first, Hajdu introduced “Kalman’s Day” to the public as a theatre play in 2016. It shows what happens to couples after the romance and kids have come and gone. According to “Kalman’s Day”, the answer is “nothing good”.
In the film adaptation, as he did in the play, Hajdu takes the stage as the twisted character of Kálmán in a minimalist, vivid and heartbreaking story with captivating long takes and meaningful dialogues. In a 2017 interview, Hajdu is quoted as saying that there were many possible directions this story could take and mediums to encompass, such as a theater play, radio drama and film as well as possibly a documentary and an exhibition.
