Interview with the Director of "Your Lovely Smile"
"I like to ask real people, for example a real filmmaker, real film programmer, even the owner of the theatre. The charachters we see are all real" - Kah Wai Lim
"Your Sweet Smile" is a delightful minimalist micro-budget dramedy that ironically and truthfully describes the sad post-Covid situation in Japanese cinema. The fast-changing film culture and the newly (re)discovered habits of viewers are confusing, but director and professional optimist Hirobumi Watanabe tries stubbornly to invent clever methods of film distribution. Watanabe's character goes on a nostalgic expedition from Okinawa to Hokkaido to visit arthouse cinemas and find out which ones are still willing to show smaller films from independent creators.
Today's guest is director-screenwriter Kah Wai Lim, who is known here at BNFF for his previous film "Comings and Goings", which was loved by our audiences in 2020. Kah Wai Lim's previous works include Fly Me to Minami (2013), No Where, Now Here (2018) and New World (2011).
