An interview with Arko Okk, the director of "The Ice That Still Supports Us", interviewer Massimo Iannetti
"Arko Okk decided to study filmmaking to have a different way of self-expression from the generations of musicians in his family. He founded the Acuba Film Studio in 1998 with Jaan Tätte and works as a freelance cameraman, producer, and director. His debut feature as director, producer, and scriptwriter was ""The Highway Crossing"" (1999).
The documentary ""The Ice That Still Supports Us"" reflects people's desire to be happy in a rapidly changing world, even as this world is breaking like spring ice. The 8 years of footage from the ice path between Noarootsi and Haapsalu forms a portrait of the people's lives living near the seaside.
Okk made 7 trips on the road, which would always bring something new - you never knew how long it would be or who you would meet on the way. He says that although the film is about the melting of the ice, it is not really about climate change. It is much more a film about changes in society and surviving them as well as about himself learning to meet the unknown. ""It is a road that is connecting, but at the same time it is disappearing, it is melting. So people are again divided to both sides.""
